Why it matters
It settled, for me, that the market is usually smarter than the individual — and that humility is a strategy.
The case that investors are far better off buying and holding a low-cost index fund than trying to out-trade the market or pick managers who can.
- Markets are largely efficient: prices already reflect what is knowable.
- A thing is worth only what someone else will pay for it.
- The 'rule of 72' is a fast way to reason about compounding.
- Costs and taxes compound against you as surely as returns compound for you.

What changed after reading this
It made me suspicious of my own edge. The honest position for most capital, most of the time, is that the market has already priced what I think I know.
Where I disagree
Efficiency is a tendency, not a law. The book under-weights the moments when markets are most wrong — regime changes, liquidity breaks, reflexive bubbles — which is exactly where asymmetric opportunity lives.
How it connects
- Blockhedge — the argument for indexing is also the argument for transparency: if you can’t beat the market on information, don’t pretend to. Capital without opacity. The edge, when there is one, has to come from structure and access, not from a story.
- Intelliblitz — “the market knows more than any one node” is the same lesson as “one source of truth beats ten dashboards”: aggregate signal over private certainty.
- Default to broad, low-cost index exposure; make activity earn its place.
- Treat confident forecasts as entertainment, not inputs.
