Why it matters
It reframed knowledge as the search for good explanations — the closest thing I have to a working theory of progress.
An argument that progress is unbounded because good explanations — hard to vary, reaching beyond the evidence that prompted them — let us correct any error that isn't forbidden by the laws of physics.

What changed after reading this
It gave me a single test for ideas — is this explanation hard to vary? — that I now apply to architecture, theses, and even photographs.
Where I disagree
The optimism is bracing but can read as frictionless. Knowing a thing is possible given the right knowledge is not the same as having the institutions, capital, or time to get there.
How it connects
- Intelliblitz — “good explanations are hard to vary” is my bar for a system design: if a dashboard’s logic can be bent to tell any story, it isn’t truth, it’s decoration.
- Blockhedge — a thesis that “reaches beyond the evidence” is what survives a cycle; one that only fits the last chart does not.
- Fineara — a strong image is also hard to vary: remove anything and it collapses.
- Prefer explanations that are hard to vary over ones that merely fit the data.
- Treat every system as error-correcting or doomed to stagnate.
